The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has released its 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA), providing a comprehensive overview of the city’s health landscape. This assessment, informed by data and input from over 3,400 residents, identifies five priority health issues: chronic disease, maternal and child health, mental health, substance use, and violence and injury.
Key Findings
The CHA reveals that injury and violence are leading causes of premature death and disability in Milwaukee. Additionally, disparities persist in education, housing, infant mortality rates, and life expectancy, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Community-Driven Initiatives
In response to these challenges, MHD has launched MKE Elevate, a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) that emphasizes community engagement and collaboration. The plan focuses on creating safe, healthy, and equitable neighborhoods by addressing the identified health priorities.
Collaborative Efforts
Partnerships play a crucial role in these initiatives. The Milwaukee Health Care Partnership, comprising local health systems and public health agencies, conducts a shared Community Health Needs Assessment every three years. This collaborative approach ensures that health improvement strategies are informed by comprehensive data and community input.
Addressing Housing and Environmental Concerns
Beyond health services, the city is tackling social determinants of health. A recent survey by the Reclaiming Our Neighborhoods Coalition found that approximately 22.3% of properties in 17 of Milwaukee’s oldest neighborhoods require major exterior repairs. This highlights the need for improved housing conditions to support overall community health.
Environmental health is also a focus, with efforts underway to address lead exposure, particularly among Black and Brown children in the city’s north and south sides. Research indicates that these communities are disproportionately affected by lead from paint and aging plumbing in older homes.
Looking Ahead
Milwaukee’s commitment to improving community health is evident through these comprehensive assessments and collaborative initiatives. By addressing both health services and social determinants, the city aims to create a healthier environment for all residents.
